About this product

The estate

Château Talbot comprises 110 hectares of a single vineyard in the heart of the Saint-Julien commune.
Ideally situated on the banks of the Gironde estuary on hilltops of alluvial gravel carried by the Dordogne River from the Massif Central and from the Pyrenees by the Garonne.

Its name originates with Connétable Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury, governor of Guyenne as well as being a famous English military commander, who was defeated at the battle of Castillon in 1453.

The Vintage

1988 was the first of a fine series of 3.
Winter and spring were damp, placing flowering in challenging conditions. Temperature were within average but summer saw less rain than usual. Grapes were overall concentrated with high tannins and acidity levels.

What they say:

Vinous (05/2018)

The bouquet is very attractive with bright soy-tinged red fruit, sandalwood, clove and a touch of antique bureau. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannin, soft in texture with soy-tinged (again) red fruit, finely judged acidity and a classic, traditional cedar-tinged finish that is maybe just a tad too bitter, though this might be offset accompanied by suitable cuisine. One for those that like traditional Saint Julien, although I would drink bottles in the near future. (NM)
